Stock Symbol

( trading symbol )

While this would seem to be obvious, that is exactly wherein the problem stems.  We tend to assume that if we see it in print it is correct.  Your local news paper list your favorite stock as "My Favorite Stock" having the trading symbol of MFS.
However - unless this is the registered symbol with the SEC, you will be buying something other than what you may have intended.
The symbols also lend a hint as to which market they are trading on as all NASDAQ securities are registered with at least 4 characters and securities trading on the New York and American exchanges, (markets), will have three or less characters for their symbols.

As an example of how the symbol may not appear as you would think, the registered trading symbol for Coca-Cola is KO.

Not exactly what you would probably have thought !
